The 21 things you need to know!

  1. Have a plan & stick to it! Tell somebody where you are going & what time you expect to be back!
  2. The leader should always keep pace with the slowest person!
  3. When setting a fire for warm, remember, its tinder followed by kindling then fuel
  4. Duct Tape ( can be used to create a stretcher , band aids, sling , and many more items)
  5. Tinder = small shavings, Kindling = small branches, Fuel = logs
  6. Backpack to carry all essentials including a 10ftx12ft Tarp for shelter or for use as a stretcher
  7. Food, Water & Toilet paper
  8. Rope or Twine
  9. Matches / Lighter / Firestarter & Tinder
  10. Communication Device (ie; cellphone w/GPS)
  11. Flashlight (extra batteries)
  12. Compass & Map
  13. Basic First Aid Kit (including sling, dressings, sam splint, ziplock bags, chewable baby aspirins, Benadryl)
  14. Proper Shoes/Boots & extra socks
  15. Hat / Sunscreen/ Repellent & Sunglasses
  16. Knife
  17. Proper Clothing in layers (note: first layer = no cotton garments)
  18. Whistle & Mirror
  19. Raingear & Walking Stick
  20. Space Blanket
  21. Plastic Contractor Bag
  22. Sleeping Bag (not essential)
    Note: Before leaving always 'size-up' your group by asking about their allergies & medical conditions and assessing what they are using for footwear!
